CCP9/ARCHER2 hackathon on directive-based GPU acceleration of Fortran codes
There were three EPCC expert tutors and 27 participants organised into 8 teams, each representing a different scientific code. Besides five CCP9-supported codes (CASINO, CASTEP, CONQUEST, CRYSTAL and ONETEP), there were also representatives of other scientific domains: 2DECOMP and CHAPSim (engineering), PROMPI (astrophysics), and RAFFLE and HEATFLOW (materials science). The participants had access to two different GPU architectures: MI300A from the AMD training cloud and the Nvidia GH200 nodes from Bede. Despite mixed experience with GPU programming, all teams reported significant progress towards their stated goals. The focus on Fortran codes was very appreciated, as these are less supported at other more general hackathons, and strong interest was expressed in a potential follow-up.
